The FENCE: ONLINE ARTIST TALKS

 

Presented by the Exposure Photography Festival, this series of Online Artist Talks provides insights into the works and practices of exhibiting photographers featured in the 8th edition of the Photoville FENCE. The FENCE was displayed during the February 2020 Exposure Festival in downtown Calgary, Alberta. The FENCE is a large-scale traveling photography exhibition reaching more than six million visitors annually, through open-air exhibitions the 8th edition was showcased in eight cities across North America. This outdoor exhibition creates a truly public platform, presenting powerful photographic narratives to a diverse and expansive audience. Alongside The FENCE exhibition, Exposure presented the Western Canadian Regional Edition, open to submissions from photographers residing in Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Northwest Territories and Yukon. The Western Canadian Regional Edition showcased the work of photographers Nathan Jones, Callan Field, Larry Louie and Shira Gold.


 

ITS ALL IN MY HEAD is a multimedia project that explores the coping mechanisms of survivors of terrorism and violent conflict by using layered portraits of the things they do to help themselves move forward or, otherwise. The project aims to advocate for increased access to psychosocial support for the survivors, which in turn will improve their mental health.

ETINOSA YVONNE is a self-taught documentary photographer from Benin, Nigeria. She considers photography to be a medium of expression and a tool to drive social change. Etinosa leverages the power of visual storytelling to create awareness, educate, and inform people about causes and issues she is passionate about.

BEHIND THE CHUTES explores rodeo culture across the Canadian plains. Every year for one weekend, many small towns come alive with a mix of cowboys, rodeo fans, and livestock. Competitors chase their belt buckle dreams down grid roads, right out of the chute.

NATHAN JONES is a photographer based out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Born and raised in the heart of the prairies, his approach to photography is heavily influenced by growing up on a family farm. He is particularly interested in documenting rural and remote areas, hoping to offer insight into lifestyles that are often overlooked and under represented.

VULNERABILITY is the second piece of an eight-part series entitled Good Grief – A Visual Articulation of Shira’s personal Journey After the Life-Changing Loss of Her Mother, Melanie Gold. Through landscape self-portraits, the imagery reveals the vast and intense array of emotions mourners often face in their individual grief journey. Each piece expresses a fundamental shift in one’s reality and identity.

SHIRA GOLD is an internationally exhibited fine art photographer from Vancouver, Canada. She seeks to isolate images of stillness and beauty from complicated and painful moments.

PAINTING-LIKE makes reference to famous paintings because they activate powerful emotions in the way Chagall, Rothko, or de Staël’s artwork often does. These inspired photos were taken with my camera pointing straight down over the Camargue aboard an ultra-light motor aircraft.

MAGALI CHESNEL was born in Versailles and is a native of Brittany, France. She is a French artist, painter and an award-winning, globally exhibited aerial photographer.

LARRY LOUIE is an international award winning cultural, humanitarian and world documentary photographer, storyteller and speaker based in Edmonton, Alberta. 

 MINING IN HELL’S FIRE FOR DEVIL’S GOLD explores the volcanic mountain of Kawah Ijen on the Island of Java in Indonesia, toxic smoke billows out onto the surface of the mountain through tentacle-like tunnels. A golden treasure is escorted into the light from the depths of the burning hell fires: pure sulphur, or Devil’s gold, as the local calls it.
