ABOUT THIS WORK

“My photo collage work is an exploration into personal ancestry and immigrant history. As a second generation Canadian I have felt disconnected from my Malaysian-Chinese and German heritage, motivating me to focus on my collection of family photographs. Scanning these old photographs and editing them with my own contemporary images allows me to merge past and present, looking for surprises and similarities that are cultural and visual. Continually working and thinking with photographs of my heritage brought my attention towards migration’s effect on familial and self-knowledge. For me, this process of splicing together new and old photographs gives the image another life; a renewed glimpse into a fading memory. These works feature photographs of my grandparents, uncle, great uncle and great grandmother.” – Angeline Teoh Simon
