Danny Luong

ARTIST BIO

Danny Luong is a photographer based in Mohkinstsis/Calgary, Alberta, Treaty 7 territory. Luong holds a BA in Journalism from Mount Royal University and works to represent landed East-Asian migrants and refugees through personal documentary.

As an uninvited guest, Luong is interested in ancestral lineages and the effects of history on generations of migrants. With an emphasis on duality, Luong’s graphic style recalls both snapshots and gritty photojournalism from a mix of medium format, 35mm, and digital stills. Luong’s subjects emphasize the tribulations of generations, shared cultural values and the effects of displacement on first and second generation Canadian lives.

Recently, Luong held his first solo show, trap (disambiguation) here in the city at The Bows artist run centre. The show has been picked up to tour at Gallery Gachet in Vancouver for their 2026 programming. Luong has shown work with The New Gallery, Werklund Centre, Alberta Society of Artists and the Asian Heritage Foundation Calgary.

ABOUT THIS WORK

“from a back catalog of memories that form my core, are stories from my mother and grandparents about the imperialist war of aggression on vietnam. i remember how my grandmother would simultaneously be awed by the stampede fireworks outside our front door during the summer days and cowed by how it shook the foundations of our home. ‘it sounds like the bombs’ she whispered to me as i held her one summer evening – what is the exposure time of memory?

a sense of home and feelings of belonging will inevitably produce relationships with place. this relationship will bring forth attachment. attachment will create a void when it is irrevocably ripped away from you. the want and need to belong and create a sense of home are so universal to us that they could be called human. to disallow feeling this would be akin to being a machine. cold and unthinking. attachment is not evil, it brings us warmth, joy and camaraderie to be enjoyed in the present.” – Danny Luong
