Exposure Studio 2.0

Exposure Studio is an online program that offers Calgary based photographers an opportunity to develop their practice through a series of discussion-based events. Participating local photographic artists will be invited to become part of an arts collective that Exposure will continue to support.

Exposure Studio will provide opportunities for participants to engage with some of photography’s top professionals from around the world. As a Studio participant you will be able to gain invaluable inspiration, knowledge and advice, advancing your development in your practice and profession. You will be able to ask Studio speakers for advice regarding your current practice, work in progress and career development. In this salon-style forum we stress interactivity and bringing multiple voices into dialogue, while promoting conversation about contemporary photography and the photographic medium.

Invited Studio speakers will be local, provincial, national, and international photography professionals. Discussion topics might include: how to financially support your practice, how to gain exhibition opportunities, how to edit a portfolio, how to create a website, how to write an artist statement, how to sequence images for publication, how to print your own photo book, how to approach magazines and newspapers for assignment work, or how to use social media effectively as an artist. Conversations may include: using photography as a tool for social change, engaging with communities in a meaningful way through art, using photography to express personal narratives and identities, and how a photographer's identity and social position shapes the stories they are able to tell.

The Exposure Studio program promotes social cohesion through art and encourages community, connection and collaboration. Studio alumni will be encouraged to continue the conversation and to support one another on their creative journeys, with support from Exposure.

In the spirit of reconciliation, we acknowledge that the Exposure Photography Festival and the Exposure Studio programme takes place on the traditional Treaty 7 territory of the Blackfoot confederacy: Siksika, Kainai, Piikani as well as the Îyâxe Nakoda and Tsuut’ina nations. We acknowledge that this territory is home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3 within the historical Northwest Métis homeland. We would also like to acknowledge that Exposure Photography Festival is situated on land adjacent to where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, and the traditional Blackfoot name of this place is “Moh’kins’tsis”, which we now call the City of Calgary. Finally, we honour and acknowledge all Nations, indigenous and non, who live, work and play in Moh’kins’tsis and help steward this land and honour and celebrate this territory.
