    Interim Curator, Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Lethbridge, Canada

    Adam Whitford is the Interim Curator for the Southern Alberta Art Gallery where he curates exhibitions that consider dialogues between local, national, and international conversations. At the SAAG, he has curated exhibitions with Lauren Crazybull, Morgan Melenka, Gabriel Esteban Molina, and Mandy Espezel and has upcoming exhibitions featuring Emily Neufeld and Les Ramsay. As a curatorial professional, his previous roles include Curatorial Assistant at the Art Gallery of Alberta and Curatorial/Collections Intern at the Woodstock Art Gallery. As a writer, he has been published by the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Canadian Art, Galleries West, the Art Gallery of Burlington, and the Woodstock Art Gallery. He holds a BFA in Art & Design as well as an MA in the History of Art, Design, and Visual Culture from the University of Alberta.

  • CAMILLA BROWN

    Curator, Writer & Educator, UK

    Camilla Brown is a curator, writer and educator on contemporary art, specialising in photography based in the Derbyshire. For ten years she was Senior curator at The Photographers’ Gallery, London previously she was Exhibitions Curator at Tate Liverpool. She is working on a new MA Photographer course at Middlesex University with a focus on social engagement. Her writing on contemporary photography is regularly published in books and magazines. For the past few years she has been Associate Curator at Grain Photography Hub. She is on the steering group for the Format Photography Festival. A recent book Rural Gaze has been published by GRAIN in which she wrote an essay on 11 new commissions.

  • GEORGE WEBBER

    Photographer, Calgary, Canada

    George Webber has been photographing the people, landscape and architecture of the Canadian west for over 40 years. He was inducted into The Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1999. George has twice been the recipient of the National Magazine Gold Award for Photojournalism. His books include Requiem, A World Within, People of The Blood, Last Call, In This Place, Prairie Gothic, Badlands and Alberta Book, Saskatchewan Book and Borrowed Time. Webber’s work can be found in numerous Canadian and European museum collections. The documentary Lost Horizons: The Photography of George Webber chronicles his career.

  • KANIKA ANAND

    Associate Curator & Public Programs Manager, Contemporary Calgary, Calgary, Canada

    Kanika Anand is an arts manager, writer and curator, with a BA in History from Delhi University (2005) and an MA Art History from the National Museum Institute, India (2008). She has been curatorial fellow at the Centre National d’Art Contemporain, Grenoble, France (2012-13) and fellow at the Global Cultural Leadership Programme, organized by the Cultural Diplomacy Platform (2018). She has worked extensively in the United States, France and India, as an arts manager and an independent curator from 2008-2019. She writes for several international art publications including Art Basel and Ocula and developed and edited the first seven-volume series of research essays published by the Serendipity Arts Trust, India (2017-18). She was the Founder of Parked-At, a roving exhibition platform based in New Delhi (2015- 2017) and remains an active curatorial member of the Indian Ceramics Triennale (2017- present). Her interest and involvement in developing new and meaningful formats of engagement continues across her current curatorial and public programming roles at Contemporary Calgary.

  • LAURA NOBLE

    Director of L A Noble Gallery & FIX Photo Festival, Artist, Curator, Writer & Educator, London UK

    Laura Noble is an artist, collector, and the Director of L A Noble Gallery (LANG) in London and FIX Photo Festival. She represents emerging and established artists and champions them through LANG exhibitions, festivals and museums in the UK and abroad. She curates both at LANG and independently at venues globally. Laura works with organisations promoting photography, residency programs and also as a portfolio reviewer at photo festivals worldwide. She launched FIX Photo Festival in 2016 which has gained worldwide recognition, opportunities and participation.

    Her extensive writing on art includes the book The Art of Collecting Photography which is a seminal guide to collecting photography, with primary essays in many monographs and anthologies. As an avid collector, Laura prides herself on discovering new talent, developing projects, driving education in the arts, and writes extensively on art and photography in numerous journals. She is currently working on a new book about photography inclusivity and representation, which will launch alongside a global touring exhibition.

    Laura lectures on all aspects of collecting photography, professional and gallery practice. Her advice on professional practice and the art market is also keenly received at several museums, universities, and institutions around the world. Committed to helping emerging photographers she runs workshops, mentoring, and one-to-one portfolio reviews in person and online for photographers at every stage of their career.   • NICOLA SHIPLEY

    Director of GRAIN Projects, UK

    Nicola is a Producer, Curator, Mentor and Consultant specialising in photography. She trained as an art historian, has an MA in History of Art, and a background in the visual arts, including in commissioning, exhibitions, collections, public art, artists education and professional development.

    She is co-founder and Director of GRAIN Projects, based in Birmingham UK. GRAIN is a platform for contemporary photography and a hub and network for practitioners. The programme includes commissions, exhibitions, residencies, publishing, projects and events including the biannual national symposium The State of Photography.   • ROBIN LYNCH

    Curator, Travelling Exhibitions Program NW, Alberta, Canada

    Robin Lynch is the Curator/Manager of the Travelling Exhibitions program, Northwest. She has a PhD in Modern and Contemporary art history from McGill University, and a Masters in Curatorial Studies from Bard College. From 2019-2020, Robin was a pre-doctoral fellow at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

  • RYAN DOHERTY

    Chief Curator, Contemporary Calgary, Calgary, Canada

    Ryan Doherty is a curator, writer and administrator who joined the staff of Contemporary Calgary as Chief Curator in 2019. He received his MA from the Centre for Curatorial Studies at Bard College in New York (2007) and his undergraduate degree at the University of Lethbridge (1997). He worked at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery (SAAG) as Curator beginning in 2008 and as Director since 2013. He has curated a wide range of solo and group exhibitions across the county and has contributed to numerous catalogues and public programs. He has participated on multiple national juries including the Sobey Art Award and the RBC Canadian Painting Competition and recently spearheaded Field Trip: Art Across Canada, a national platform for collaborative arts engagement.

  • TIFFANY JONES

    Publisher, Overlapse Books, UK

    Raised in Canada, Tiffany studied photojournalism in college and later founded the Overlapse imprint in London, UK while researching for her MA in Publishing. Her thesis topic investigated dynamics of the photobooks market (Oxford Brookes University, 2016). Overlapse has since published several internationally recognized and engaging books including Beyond Drifting: Imperfectly Known Animals by Mandy Barker (UK) and The Disappearance of Joseph Plummer by Amani Willett (USA). In collaboration with photographers, artists and storytellers based around the world, Tiffany works with subjects that address social, cultural, and environmental issues – topics connected with human behaviour and experience.

    With over 30 years dedicated to arts publishing and photographic storytelling, Tiffany is an editor, designer, researcher and educator. From 2009-14, she edited fLIP magazine for London Independent Photography, a grassroots association of which she is an honorary lifetime member. She has been a juror for the 2020 Breadfield Photobook Dummy Award (Sweden), Photolucida Critical Mass competition (USA), the Fiebre Photobook Dummy Award (Spain), and International Street Photography Awards.

  • DEBORAH ROBINSON

    Head of Exhibitions, The New Art Gallery Walsall, UK

    Deborah Robinson is Head of Exhibitions at The New Art Gallery Walsall. She has been responsible for the contemporary art programme since the opening of the gallery in 2000. The programme includes exhibitions, a studio programme, artists’ projects, events and a professional development programme delivered in partnership with New Art West Midlands.

    Deborah has curated many solo and group exhibitions. These have included major exhibitions by Mat Collishaw, Mahtab Hussain, Idris Khan, Hew Locke, Ged Quinn, Chiharu Shiota, Joana Vasconcelos and Zarina Bhimji. She has also worked with many regional artists to realise exhibitions and artist’s projects.

    Deborah sits on the Advisory Panel for New Art West Midlands, she is a member of the Acquisitions Advisory Panel for the British Council Collection and is a Board member of Meadow Arts.

  • DONA SCHWARTZ

    Artist & Professor, University of Calgary, President & Board Chair, Exposure Photography Festival, Calgary, Canada

    Dona Schwartz is a photographic artist whose work explores everyday life and culture. Her work examines definitions of family and the nature of domesticity, cultural continuity and change, and transitional moments in life. In addition to her work as an artist, she is a scholar and educator. She earned a PhD at the Annenberg School for Communications at the University of Pennsylvania, specializing in visual communication and ethnographic research. She has published two photographic ethnographies, Waucoma Twilight: Generations of the Farm (Smithsonian Institution Press, 1992) and Contesting the Super Bowl (Routledge, 1997). Her photographic monograph, In the Kitchen, was published by Kehrer Verlag in 2009. On the Nest, also published by Kehrer, was released in December 2015. Schwartz’s award-winning photographs have been internationally exhibited and published. Schwartz’s work is included in the collections of the Library of Congress, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Musée de l’Elysée, the George Eastman Museum, the Harry Ransom Center, the Portland Art Museum, and the Kinsey Institute. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Schwartz is a Professor in the Department of Art at the University of Calgary, and she is President and Board Chair of the annual Exposure Photography Festival. Schwartz is represented by Stephen Bulger Gallery, Toronto.

  • GEMMA MARMALADE

    Artist & Programme Leader in Photography University of Derby, UK

    Gemma Marmalade is a visual artist, researcher, and Programme Leader for Photography at the University of Derby, UK.

    Gemma’s work uses photography, video, and performance that playfully negotiates the authenticity of speech acts within history, science, and queer politics. Her practice and research has been presented internationally including the Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen; The Photographers’ Gallery, London; and the Marjorie Barrick Museum, Las Vegas.

  • HANA KALUZNICK

    Assistant Curator, Department of Photography, Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), UK

    Hana Kaluznick is Assistant Curator in the Department of Photography at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A). She is currently working on the launch and inaugural displays for Phase 2 of the V&A’s Photography Centre, opening autumn 2022. She has contributed to displays including: Known and Strange: 15 Photographers from the Collection (V&A, forthcoming summer 2021), Valérie Belin / Reflection (V&A, 2019), and Kodak Canada: The Early Years 1899-1939 (Ryerson Image Centre, 2018), among others. Recent publications include texts in Photographic Canadiana and the Royal Photographic Society journals. She gained her MA in Photography Preservation and Collections Management from Ryerson University, Toronto.

  • HOLLY ROUSSELL

    Curator, China/Switzerland

    Holly Roussell is Swiss/American independent curator, museologist, and researcher with in-depth knowledge of photography and contemporary art from East Asia. She is currently a curator with the UCCA Center for Contemporary Art, China. Previous roles include coordinating the worldwide traveling exhibitions program and photography prize, the Prix Elysée, for the Musée de l’Elysée, Lausanne, from 2013 to 2017; co-founding the Asia Photography Project, a non-profit curatorial collective for photography from East Asia; and cofounding MEET for Photography, an online platform matching photographers and experts through an algorithm based on shared interests and objectives. As an independent curator, some recent projects include Pixy Liao: Your Gaze Belongs to Me at Fotografiska, Stockholm (2021) and New York (2021) ; acting as curator for the 4th Shenzhen Independent Animation Biennale (2018); Pixy Liao Experimental Relationship at the Rencontres d’Arles (2019); Dai Jianyong Judy Zhu at the Shanghai Centre of Photography (2019), Jimei x Arles Foto Festival (2018) and Lianzhou Foto Festival (2019) and the major publication and travelling exhibition project, Civilization: The Way We Live Now (co-curated with William A. Ewing) that traveled to the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul, KR (2018), UCCA Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing. CN (2019), NGV, Melbourne, AUS (2019), Auckland Art Gallery (2020), MUCEUM, Marseille, FR (2021) and other venues.

    Holly Roussell is a regular expert to international portfolio reviews and has contributed as author to a number of exhibition catalogues, publications and magazines on photography. In 2022, Roussell joins the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul, South Korea as International Curatorial Researcher in residence.

    Holly is particularly interested in conceptual photography, experimental photographic processes, textural works and representations of landscape or environmental issues. She is keen to support artists with editing and strategic advice for projects at all stages.

  • NAOMI POTTER

    Director/Curator of Esker Foundation, Calgary, Canada

    Naomi Potter is the Director/Curator of Esker Foundation in Calgary. From 2009-2011, she was curator of Walter Phillips Gallery at The Banff Centre where she produced solo projects, exhibitions, and public art commissions. In 2003, Potter was awarded a yearlong Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst (DAAD) artist residency in Istanbul, and from 2003 to 2007 was co-director of the international artist residency program at CESTA in the Czech Republic. In 2015 was a guest of both the Australian Arts Council and British Council International Curatorial Visit programs, and has been a jury member for numerous Canadian art awards and jury’s including: a member of the Curatorial Selection Committee for Venice 2019; BMO 1st Art! Selection Committee (2017/18); Sobey Art Award (2016); and the RBC Canadian Painting Competition (2014). She currently sits on the Board of the Calgary Institute of the Humanities, University of Calgary, and the Gail and Stephen A. Jarislowsky Outstanding Artist Program Committee for the Banff Centre.     Nuno Ricou Salgado is the Artistic Director and Head Coordinator of PARALLEL – European Photo Based platform. PARALLEL is a platform that brings together creative European organisations committed to promoting cross-cultural exchanges and mentorships in order to set new standards in contemporary photography. Members include museums, galleries, cultural centres, festivals, art schools and publishers – 18 of the most vibrant European cultural hubs, from 16 different countries, that participate in selecting and hosting emerging artists and curators, organising exhibitions and promoting artistic networking.

    Working since 1990 as a creative producer and project manager for several institutions in the cultural industries.   • VINCENT CIANNI

    Photographer, Educator & Director of the Newburgh Community Photo Project, USA

    Vincent Cianni is a documentary photographer exploring community, memory and social justice issues through image, text and audio. Cianni holds an MFA in Photography from SUNY New Paltz and teaches at Parsons, The New School for Design in NYC. The Archive for Documentary Arts (Duke University) established a study archive of his photographic work in 2007. We Skate Hardcore, published by NYU Press and the Center for Documentary Studies in 2004, was awarded the American Association of University Press Best Book Design and a major survey of this work was exhibited at the Museum of the City of New York in 2006. Gays in the Military, an investigation into the effects of the military’s ban on the lives and careers of LGBT service members was published by Daylight Books in May 2014 and was featured in the New York Times Sunday Review and The Katie Couric Show. He recently presented at TED x University o fNevada (2015) and has lectured on his work at the Library of Congress, the American Psychiatric Association and OutServe/SLDN Leadership Conference, and in many photographic, gallery, and museum venues. Cianni’s photographs have appeared in The New Republic, Aperture, Double Take, The New Yorker, Slate, Vice UK, Photography as Activism; New York 400: A Visual History of America’s Greatest City; The Polaroid Book and numerous anthologies and online magazines. His photographs have been exhibited nationally and internationally at the Stephen Daiter Gallery (Chicago), Verve Gallery (Santa Fe), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the George Eastman House, and in international photo festivals at Houston Fotofest, KOLGA Tbilisi Photo Festival, and the 7th Internaltionale Fototage Mannheim. His photographs reside in numerous public and private collections including Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro; The Library of Congress; The Kinsey Institute for Sexual Research; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; George Eastman House; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Museum of the City of New York, Brooklyn Museum of Art, and Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
