Instructor Bio:
Calgary based portraitist, photo-illustrator, and visionary Tim Nguyen has always been drawn to the spotlight. Once an aspiring actor, Tim has become the most highly sought-after photographer in the Performing Arts community. His experience informs his advertising work, portraiture, and his innate ability to capture action on stage. Over time, he also naturally became a historian for The Arts in Calgary - which he considers to be one of the great honours of his career.
His best known work, Lumination, is a theatrically-inspired, multi-year study of isolated figures in pure negative space. Since 2013, Tim has produced over one thousand pieces of work in his stark and unique aesthetic. Lumination was released as a coffee table book in 2015, which sold out immediately and went on to receive multiple awards and gallery showings.
Tim’s influences include the Dutch Golden Era paintings, cyberpunk culture, burlesque, and Irving Penn. He has created content for prominent brands such as Nikon Lenswear, Colliers International, and Rocky Mountain Soap. He currently operates his own studio space in downtown Calgary.
