Cultural Landscapes

Exhibition dates: February 1 - 28

These artists investigate how our perceptions of place, landscapes, and our interactions with nature are constantly shifting in the urban environment. Urban geography, social norms, and institutional frameworks influence how we interact with the land.  Cultural Landscapes at Lougheed House invites the viewer to reconsider public spaces, like Lougheed House, and observe and reflect on things beyond the immediately apparent. It encourages a deeper look at our past, current, and future landscapes.

Gone today/here tomorrow was a botanical intervention into the Lougheed House building and grounds. As a conclusion to three months as artists-in-residence, Mia Rushton and Eric Moschopedis, photographed 45 native prairie grassland plants on the fireplace mantles throughout the house.

Organic Portraits is a project to collect, catalogue, and sort organic materials from Calgary’s iconic places and gardens to create a series of portraits of those landmarks.  Rocio Graham’s practice examines Calgarian’s relationship to the land and Calgarian’s collective identity, seen through the lens of our gardens and cultural landscapes.
