Art and the Suburbs – A New Perspective
Exhibition dates: February 1 - 28
Opening reception: February 1, 5-9pm
The suburbs are often eschewed as a cultural wasteland and devoid of creativity, from architecture to cookie cutter houses and big box stores. In this exhibit, award-winning child and family photographer, Jennifer Kapala, explores the magic that can be found in the simple and everyday. By taking a new perspective, she shows us that the suburbs are in fact a place where imagination meets art, and where worlds and adventures are created. Diverse works of art are presented through two distinct series: “Out of the Box,” a fine art self portraiture series which explores the limits often placed on ourselves and our imagination when we subscribe to placing ourselves in a literal and figurative “box”; and “Childhood in the Suburbs,” which presents a different view of childhood and the magic that exists in the everyday. All of art showcased in the gallery was photographed within the suburban community of Mahogany, proving that, in fact, art and creativity can thrive in the suburbs and the suburbs are a place where the ordinary can become the extraordinary.
