SAM DOTY - EXPOSURE EMERGING PHOTOGRAPHERS SHOWCASE

After years of travelling through Europe, Africa and North America, Sam started to go through his work and put together a portfolio, resulting in this series of photographs. Sam’s work focuses on presenting an image of a distant, unknown city in a familiar way, presented through a melancholic, nostalgic feeling. He is interested in finding obscure patterns through structural and material subjects, focusing mostly architecturally, finding both chaotic scenes and also very symmetrical subjects. Sam’s work excludes people to help deepen the viewer’s relationship with the location and to help enhance the feeling of distance in the location, creating an almost apocalyptic scene. Sam’s work is black and white, with very dark blacks and very bright whites to further enhance the viewer’s connection to the scene by focusing strictly on the structures and materials used.

BIOGRAPHY

My name is Sam Doty. I’m a self-taught digital photographer and currently a business student at the University of Calgary. I’ve been living in Calgary for about five years now and plan to finish my degree here. I grew up moving around and travelling often and started to use a camera as way to navigate through and document my travels. I’ve just begun my career as a photographer in the last year—with a ton of help from Exposure—and hope to further this through the Emerging Artist open call. I keep a very small portfolio, due to being both very picky and relatively inexperienced. However, I feel as if I’m finally making the work I’ve been wanting to and am super excited to begin showing it.
